ID:KS6A2_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Ribosomal protein S6 kinase alpha-2; Short=S6K-alpha-2; EC=2.7.11.1; AltName: Full=90 kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase 2; Short=p90-RSK 2; Short=p90RSK2; AltName: Full=MAP kinase-activated protein kinase 1c; Short=MAPK-activated protein kinase 1c; Short=MAPKAP kinase 1c; Short=MAPKAPK-1c; AltName: Full=Ribosomal S6 kinase 3; Short=RSK-3; AltName: Full=pp90RSK3; FUNCTION: Serine/threonine-protein kinase that acts downstream of ERK (MAPK1/ERK2 and MAPK3/ERK1) signaling and mediates mitogenic and stress-induced activation of transcription factors, regulates translation, and mediates cellular proliferation, survival, and differentiation. May function as tumor suppressor in epithelial ovarian cancer cells. CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: ATP + a protein = ADP + a phosphoprotein. COFACTOR: Magnesium. ENZYME REGULATION: Upon extracellular signal or mitogen stimulation, phosphorylated at Thr-570 in the C-terminal kinase domain (CTKD) by MAPK1/ERK2 and MAPK3/ERK1. The activated CTKD then autophosphorylates Ser-377, allowing binding of PDPK1, which in turn phosphorylates Ser-218 in the N-terminal kinase domain (NTDK) leading to the full activation of the protein and subsequent phosphorylation of the substrates by the NTKD. SUBUNIT: Forms a complex with either MAPK1/ERK2 or MAPK3/ERK1 in quiescent cells. Transiently dissociates following mitogenic stimulation (By similarity). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus. Cytoplasm. TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Widely expressed with higher expression in lung, skeletal muscle, brain, uterus, ovary, thyroid and prostate. PTM: Activated by phosphorylation at Ser-218 by PDPK1. Autophosphorylated on Ser-377, as part of the activation process. May be phosphorylated at Thr-356 and Ser-360 by MAPK1/ERK2 and MAPK3/ERK1 (By similarity). PTM: N-terminal myristoylation results in an activated kinase in the absence of added growth factors (By similarity). SIMILARITY: Belongs to the protein kinase superfamily. AGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family. S6 kinase subfamily. SIMILARITY: Contains 1 AGC-kinase C-terminal domain. SIMILARITY: Contains 2 protein kinase domains. SEQUENCE CAUTION: Sequence=AAC82496.1; Type=Erroneous initiation; Note=Translation N-terminally shortened; Sequence=BAD92353.1; Type=Erroneous initiation; Note=Translation N-terminally shortened; Sequence=BAG53121.1; Type=Frameshift; Positions=527;
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
